In the opinion piece, India’s Feudal Rapists, Amana Fontanella-Khan writes of the atrocities of the caste system in India, such as crimes going unpunished because the victim was born a ‘lower class’ person than the perpetrator. Some acts are rarely considered crimes at all.
An identifiable crisis exists in India because criminal acts such as rape are used as methods of retaliation between castes. In the article, Fontanella-Khan states when the police can’t be relied on to resolve disputes, rape often becomes a means of retribution. This has been apparent in Hindu-Muslim riots as well as in inter-caste conflict.
