Impacts of Food Deserts Many parts of the country lack fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat. These neighborhoods have a great absence of grocery stores, farmers market, and healthy food providers, although, they do have access to local quickie marts, such as a Seven Eleven, ampm, etc., and many fast food restaurants (McDonalds, Burger King etc.). Since these local marts and fast food industries are the “primary” food sources for these neighborhoods, it’s obviously not the healthiest choice due to amount of processed, sugar, and fattening foods, which are known to our nation’s obesity epidemic. Of course this isn’t going to be an overnight change, its going to take motivation to better eating habits. Gardening is a great way to get fresh fruits and vegetables and its right outside in your backyard. Building a local grocery store may help food deserts. It can be where locals can buy their produce and meat rather then choosing alternative foods such as a burger and fries. Eating healthy is something we all don’t wake up thinking we are going to do, although, we can cut out fast foods out of our diets slowly and not eat it as much you would typically eat. These options can also help reduce obesity, fighting obesity in children or early adolescents can really change eating habits while still young. We can slowly change and improve food access and food deserts with these few options. Food deserts are a dilemma in todays world in which we are trying to find solutions to help benefit those in need. Reducing food deserts around the world can also help reduce the rates of obesity too. Those neighborhoods are also low income and that’s not something they can really control when they already have been limited to food access. Although, when it comes to nutrition access, the focus should be on poverty and not on the grocery store
