A food desert is a part of the country where people do not have easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables because of the lack of farmers’ markets, healthy food stands, and grocery stores. Because of this lack of fresh produce, it is very hard for people in these areas to eat healthy. Since food deserts are such a big issue, there are many individuals and organizations trying to help supply these people with fresh fruits and vegetables so they can live a longer and healthier life.
Food deserts have a huge effect on the people living in them. Living in a food desert impacts the residents by preventing them from having access to healthy foods. Since they do not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, they have to rely heavily on junk foods,

An example of this is people setting up grocery stores and stands that sell healthy foods in food deserts. People have also come up with other creative ideas, such as postal workers picking up and delivering fresh produce to these food deserts, schools teaching kids how to grow fresh foods in a garden at their homes, and refrigerated trucks delivering fresh and healthy foods to the food deserts. Some of the organizations helping are the American Community Garden Association, Fresh Works, Minneapolis Health Corner Store Initiative, and Garden on the Go. The American Community Garden Association gave the resources for 18,000 gardens in various food deserts, the Fresh Works project gave over 200 million dollars to grocers in loans and grants for them to start and expand grocery stores, the Minneapolis Health Corner Store Initiative made it mandatory for convenience stores to sell fresh fruits, and Garden on the Go is a produce truck that makes 16 stops a week in food deserts to sell fresh fruits and vegetables at a low price. These are just a few of the many organizations that are trying to help end the suffering which people living in food deserts have to
