The documentary Food Inc. is a compelling way to display the current techniques of food production in the United States. The film also focused on the authenticity and harmfulness of eating fast food. There are only a few corporations that supply the US with food, although everything is packaged differently. Most corn comes from cornfields in Iowa because corn can be broken down easily. The documentary made it a point to show how fast food has evolved over the past half century. Most people don’t have a clue about what they are eating, nor do they care. I guarantee that if more individuals were aware of this information they would demand change. I believe that ignorance is bliss, and that I wish I had been educated on food production a lot earlier in my life. The sad truth is that changes probably will not come because these large food companies have massive community ties. The employ African Americans, Latinos and illegal immigrants & since they need work they aren’t concerned about the ethics of their labor. Another matter is that these small time farmers can’t afford to go against the corporations because they are already in debt and need their contracts to stay in operation. In addition to the current debt, farmers may accrue new debt when there are new pieces of equipment that must buy to keep their contracts. Lastly, the creation of the Dollar Menu is a hidden way to encourage fast food consumption. The video showed a family who had to choose between medications or healthy food. The prescriptions were necessary so they opted to purchase fast food at a lower price. The food is cheap, tasty, and feeling but not the least bit healthy. I think it is very sad that it is more expensive to be healthy than it is to be unhealthy. Food Inc. is a great way to show that the corporations can only do what we continue to allow them to. If we lessen the demand for their products, then they will have no choice but to conform to our criteria. There are some things that we can do to inspire a change. Shoppers need to understand that they hold all the power, and by shopping at local places will speak in volumes. This is evident because purchasers stopped buying milk at Wal-Mart because of its lack of organic options. Wal-Mart recognized this and now offers many varieties of organic milk and products.
