Food is a substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body to function. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients for a healthy life, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. The substance is ingested by an organism and or absorbed by the organism's cells in an effort to produce energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth.
Plants are one source of food. There are around 2,000 plant species, which are harvested as a food source. The Seeds of a plant can serve as good source of nutrients, as the seed contain healthy fats, such as Omega fats. Some examples of seeds that animals and humans consume include cereals, wheat, rice, beans, peas, and nuts. In addition, to seed plants also produce fruits which derives from the plant’s ovaries. Fruits make up a significant part of animals and humans diets. The second type of plant that is commonly eaten as food is vegetable. These contain leafy greens like broccoli, spinach, or cauliflower and originate for an edible part of a plant. However, some fruits such as tomatoes, pumpkins, and eggplants can be seen as either fruit or vegetables depending on the source. Whether the person being asked is a biologist, a person who is an expert in different cultures, or just a friend opinions and reasoning is sure to vary.
Another food source is an animal’s flesh, or meat. Meat is mainly composed of water and protein, and is usually eaten with other food to create a balanced meal. It is edible raw but is normally eaten cooked and seasoned for flavor and to reduce the
