SHORT STORY

Bases loaded, one out, winning run on first. The stage is set for the old man who’s approaching twenty years in the game, still chasing that world series berth. If this were a Hollywood script you wouldn’t believe, after all they shouldn’t be in this spot. Two days before he sent the series to a game seven on a grounder through the legs allowing the winning run to score. As he approaches the plate all he can hear is the ringing in his ears from the crowd cheers and his name over the intercom “Now batting for the Yankees, number Six, Slade Marquardt”. Slade has been questioned about retirement as his forty year old body isn’t the same one as the twenty one year old five tool player he came into the league with but in almost twenty years in this game it seems as though he won’t stop till he reaches the top of the mountain top.

Looking out to the mound he’s staring into the face of his old best friend Eric Vasquez pitching for Seattle. They came up through the minor leagues together, ever since Double A ball. They were battery mates in New York no one could ever crack the code of this pitcher and catcher combination.
