Speed. Strength. Agility. Those are words to describe the qualities in an athlete for Americas favorite past time, football. For year Americans have enjoyed watching males, from teenage years up into adulthood, play this physically aggressive sport. These players are told to knock, tackle, or stop the opposing team from scoring with using nothing but their bodies. Some can take a hit and be just fine, while others take a hit that physically injures them. What the underlining problem with this sport is with the injuries you cannot see or could easily played off as nothing. If a player impacts another player hard enough for one, or both players, to knock heads or hit the ground it can cause concussions and other serious brain injuries. Terry Long, a linebacker for Pittsburgh Steelers, committed suicide by drinking antifreeze. Justin Strzelczyk , a offensive lineman for Pittsburgh Steelers, drove on to oncoming traffic going 90 MPH into a tank truck to escape police and died. Both Andre Waters, a NFL safety, and Junior Seau, a linebacker, committed suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. All four men had suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy that led to their suicide. Not all NFL players with chronic traumatic encephalopathy are suicidal, some end up with dementia or memory loss. Not all head injuries cause extreme damage. Tight end for Denver Broncos, Nate Jackson ended his career early after he suffered a bad head injury during a game. Jackson says at the time the NFL operated off of the “don’t ask, don’t tell”, so if he got hit in the head and his head still hurt, he was going to play anyway and act like he was fine (Kirk). With the NFL not stressing how important a head injury is, some players will go game after game and never getting checked for head
