Poetry is complicated. From stanzas and formatting to hidden meanings and metaphors, poetry is hard to read, analyze, and understand. For a Father by Elise Partridge is one of those poems. It uses imagery and irony to enhance its words and helps create attachment between the poem/speaker and the reader. It combines them to make easier and more intriguing for the reader. For a Father is a poem about a loved one’s death and how to cope with it; written with personal experience by Elise Partridge.
Elise Partridge was born in 1958; and was a poet and an editor, and went to Harvard University, Boston University, Cambridge University, and the University of British Columbia. She passed away last year in Vancouver, British Columbia. Many of her poems are influenced by her experience with cancer, and the struggles of life, (“Elise Partridge”) like in For a Father, which is about her father passing away.For a Father is a very sad, pitiful poem about the speaker’s father, who was very dynamic and passed away at a young age. The poet uses two main poetic devices to communicate the mood, theme, and emotions of the poem: imagery and irony. To give an example for imagery, the author tells some stories about her father, and includes very descriptive language.
