In the colourful, inspiring novel Cloudstreet, written by Tim Winton, shows that though two different families suffer significant tragedies and loss they always overcome these difficulties by believing in hope and forgiveness. Winton expresses the emotions from both families, the Pickles and the Lambs, by creating such colourful characters which grow from the two separate families into a whole. Both the Lamb and Pickles families have been brought so much misfortune but they all choose to get together and push towards a better life for everyone involved.

The “hairy hand” or “shifty shadow of fate” leads to many irreparable disasters. Early on both families suffered significantly with Fish Lamb a bright, young boy who everyone loved drowned

With the Lamb family losing most of their beloved Fish the Pickles lost something that was putting money on the table which was Sam Pickles hand. Though the Pickles families luck begin to turn around in a somewhat negative way where Sam and his family inherited a house which happens to be one Cloud street. Both the Lambs and Pickles end up in the same house when the gambling addicted Sam has an idea to bring in tenants to increase his weekly gambling budget. Both families decided to avoid one another as they were complete opposites of one another, the Lambs were a very honest straight forward family whereas the Pickles were somewhat the opposites of the Lambs, but they have a few things in common such as Dolly and Oriel both being the rulers of their families. Though both families have had very difficult beginning at the novel both have chosen to keep going forward with the use of hope and choosing to forgive one
