He had many challenges that he had to face in order to achieve his greatness. His biggest challenge was seeking revenge for his father’s death. “O, that this too, too sullied flesh would melt” (1.3.133). In the beginning of the novel, Hamlet was depressed and wants himself to die because his mother has gotten remarried and his father is dead. ”Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder” (1.5.25). Hamlet knew that Claudius was guilty of killing his father, but he had to have proof of this before taking action. His way of leading to revenge and finding out the truth was by pretending to act crazy and coming up with a play to see if Claudius was actually guilty. ”I’ll have these players play something like the murder of my father” (2.2.623-624). Since Claudius reacted to the play, Hamlet had the proof to kill him. When he sees Claudius praying, he decides not that he is going to wait to kill him. As soon as Claudius caught on to the idea that Hamlet was going to soon kill him, he came up with a plan to stop it. “Gertrude, do not drink” (5.2.317). Claudius was going to give Hamlet poison to kill him, but Gertrude ended up drinking it. “The drink, the drink! I am poisoned” (5.2.342).Once Gertrude has died after drinking the poison, Hamlet realizes that he has to kill Claudius before Claudius kills him. “Drink off this portion” (5.2.357). Ralph, Hamlet, and Fortinbras all face challenges and controversy’s which brings out their hidden true colors. They each took action in some way which led to greatness. Poison was a symbol of death therefore, not only did Hamlet face poison, but Ralph and Fortinbras faced poison as well. Even though they did not die in the end they faced it. Ralph faced challenges toward poison when Jack tried to kill him. Fortinbras faced challenges toward poison when he risked his life and took that chance to march on Poland. Overall, they all achieved greatness in their own
