Fortunato has a lot of character traits in “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe. Fortunato was an enemy to Montresor who killed him in this short story. Fortunato fell for Montresor’s tricks in this short story which made him an easy target in this short story. Fortunato made himself an easy target because he is gullible, intoxicated, and is stubborn.
There are many clues in this story that insists Fortunato is gullible because he falls for Montresor’s tricks. For example Montresor said “Drink (2).” this made Fortunato feel obligated to take a sip. Fortunato is foolish enough not to realize what Montresor is doing until the very end of the story.
Fortunato makes himself an easy target in this story because he was intoxicated. Montresor used intoxication as said in this “Drink, I said, presenting him the wine. He raised it to his lips with a leer (2).” to lure Fortunato into the trap. This made Fortunato an easy target because when he was intoxicated he didn’t know what was happening. This added time for Montresor to complete his task. Montresor shortly after “discovered that the intoxication of Fortunato had in a great measure worn off (4).” The intoxication made him a very easy target for Montresor to complete his task

This made him sound stubborn because he didn’t want to go back as stated “ugh! ugh! ugh! we will go back; your health is to precious yous are rich, respected, admired, beloved (2).” This made Fortunato an easy target because he did not want to go back up out of the catacombs this made it easier for Montresor.
