In the United States there are about 428,000 children in the foster care system. Seventy-five percent suffer from neglect, seventeen percent suffer from physical abuse and eight percent suffer from sexual abuse. Most children that are put into foster care that have been abused or neglected have passed away after being put back into the care of their family. Sixteen percent of abuse and neglect are reported within foster care homes. 1,470 to 1,740 die from abuse and neglect in the United States.
According to Conor Friedersdorf, “ An estimated 1,640 children died in 2012 as a result of abuse or neglect, mostly at the hands of parents. “Some children who died from abuse or neglect were already known to CPS (Child Protective Services) agencies.” In Palestine,Texas a two year-old boy, Deacon Garay past away after being abused by his Stepfather, Billy Hasel. His step-father had been reported to CPS that Billy had been being abused. A case was open and a Social Worker had interviewed Deacon, his brother, and a few of his family members. Foster homes are meant to be safe temporary homes for children that are unable to live with their parents. According to ABC News,”Six siblings five boys one girl were put into a cruel foster home. They were fostered by Jacqueline Lynch who was being paid $150,000 to foster them, her son had been recently taken out of her custody due to allegations of physical and sexual abuse in her home. The six children had all shared a room, most of the time they slept on the cold floor of the room where Cockroaches came out of the ground of the wall and out the vents.
