The fundamental philosophies surrounding the purpose of sentencing consist of four methods: retribution, deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation. The goal is to ensure the citizens of American are safe and the criminals will be punished to the full extent of the law by sentencing the offender to prison. According to Gaines and Miller (2006), retribution is the oldest and most common reason to punish a person based on the Old Testament an eye for an eye. Retribution believes that the punishment should be in proportion with the crime that was committed.
