Growth is the most challenging piece of life. Esperanza has had to grow up on her own; she’s the “rose”, Tupac was referring to in “The Rose that Grew from Concrete”. Growing up can be tough, but you have to fight through it. You can’t stop because a challenge comes your way. Esperanza has a great understanding that she has to be an adult. She learned that the hard way. No one ever noticed that she was struggling with herself, which lead her to where she is; like the rose.
“They grow up and they grow down and grab the earth between their hairy toes and bite the sky with violent teeth and never quit their anger”. In the quote, Esperanza is expressing her perspective of her growth. She feels like she is forcing her growth, it’s not happening naturally; as it should. Natural growth is the best growth, because it’s too easy to stress over life and get carried away. “It learned to breath fresh air”, Tupac emphasized that in life, you have to learn on your own.

Your life is what you make most of. She couldn’t figure out how to do that and be an adult. “Four who grew despite concrete”, and “the rose that grew in the concrete”, represent the place that Esperanza feels she doesn’t belong. Nevertheless, Mango Street is what made Esperanza mature. Everything that she was experiencing is what made her into a more developed person. The roses and the trees represent the hard development of a person. The trees are Esperanza’s friends, her motivation. The rose is Esperanza’s beauty, it shows that beautiful things have it rough too. A positive perspective on life is what a will keep you going in a tough life. Esperanza tried as hard as possible to remain positive throughout her tough obstacles.
