The Weed That Kills Foxtail season in Southern California has arrived. We see a dramatic increase in problems caused by foxtails in dogs and cats during the summer and fall months. Foxtail problems are very common in Southern California. Foxtails can cause serious infections for your animals and in some cases if not properly treated can result in death. Prevention and early detection can minimize the discomfort experienced by your pet.
What are Foxtails?
Foxtails are the seeds of native and imported grasses. The barbed seed heads are designed to penetrate the solid ground when they come loose from the plant. Foxtails are often found on the trails in and around Fullerton, weedy lots and on the roadside.

The bristles along the edge of the seed often become embedded in the animal’s skin. When foxtails work their way through the skin, the area becomes infected and if left untreated results in an abscess. Dogs can get foxtails, under their eyelids, up the nose, in the ears, embed themselves in tonsils, in the skin (often between the toes), up the vagina and in the prepuce. Foxtails affect all dogs, but dogs with thick coats are more susceptible to picking up foxtails.
Early Detection Tips
If you believe that, your dog might have a foxtail stuck in its skin you should not delay in getting them to your veterinarian. If the infection is found early enough the seed can often be removed with a non-invasive procedure. If the foxtail gets through the skin and causes an abscess, surgery, antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory medication may be required. Here are some tips to help during foxtail season:
1. Examine your pets coat often during foxtail season, especially if you have been in woodsy lots or on our local
