1) This passage is from the first chapter of the book. The narrator explains to the reader how Francie's mom tells her sisters how Francie's way of living does not compare to the others at a family meal they had.
2)The narrator explains how Francie's mom says one cup each meal, she is saying how Francie can make her decisions on what she chooses to drink and if she chooses to drink it.
3)The author, Betty Smith includes this passage in the story to impact the reader. The significance of this passage is to show that pride is more important than having luxury. So the reader can infer that the author was trying to make in point in ones life.

The narrator talks about how Francie felt bad for Flossie because she likes a man that passes by every day in their neighborhood doing advertisement and every time she tries to talk to him and starts to flirt with him she gets ignored. Francie also knows that Flossie wants to be loved by someone but that every time she loves someone that person does not love her back so she gets turned down from a lot of men.
2) The narrator says, Flossie Gaddis was starved about men, Sissy was healthily hungry about them. In other words Flossie likes men and would probably do anything to get one to like her, and Sissy can most likely control herself about them and probably does not care much.
