Francis Marion According to “Bos, Carole,” Francis Marion was born at his family's South Carolina plantation in Berkeley County. A man of his time, he owned slaves and fought in the French and Indian War. Francis Marion was known as “The Swamp Fox”. He got this nickname from Lt. Colonel Banastre Tarleton. Tarleton said “As for this darned old fox, the Devil himself could not catch him”. Thus was born Marion's nickname, "The Swamp Fox”. Marion and his brother Gabriel were among the Huguenot recruits. According to “Francis Marion,” when An expedition led by Colonel Archibald Montgomerie was attacked by Cherokees. Near the town of Echoe. January 1761. The Cherokees were threatening settlers along the South Carolina border, beginning to influence Governor William Henry Lyttelton to make his military forces larger. Francis Marion was elected to South Carolina’s first provincial congress by the people of St. John’s parish. Apparently, other South Carolinians shared Marion's ambivalence, for, as the congress convened on January 11, 1775, instead of passing anti-British measures similar to those of other colonial legislatures, they ended the session by declaring their loyalty to the British …show more content…
He was reelected in 1782 and 1784. Between times, he returned to his brigade, leading it in several engagements. At the end of the war, he married a wealthy cousin, Mary Videau, and settled down at Pond Bluff, where he died on February 26, 1795. Because he was getting old he started to calm and settle down. Marion was a great leader, commander, and fighter and his death is remembered.

Francis Marion’s Early life was on the harder side. He was all over the place when he was young. His cause to join the war was for a good reason. He was a guerilla fighter. One of the best guerilla fighters. His role in the war was interesting. He got a nickname, he was named “The Swamp Fox.” His after life was a nice ending. He ended up marrying his wealthy cousin
