In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley portrays each woman as docile, passive and expendable. The main female characters like Elizabeth, Caroline and Justine function as nothing more but means to convey action to the male characters in the novel like Frankenstein and the Creature. These women successively become victims of circumstance after the unfortunate events that occur to them. Frequently, it is for the purpose of teaching a lesson to a male character or provoking an emotion within him.
