Franklin D. Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York. Growing up as an only child in a wealthy family, Roosevelt had private tutors until the age of 14 (Lowi, par. 2). When he turned 14, Roosevelt attended Groton School, a private boarding school in Massachusetts where he met Rector Endicott Peabody, a teacher who prided on grooming future politicians (Magill 703). After finishing his high school education at Groton School in 1900, Roosevelt enrolled in Harvard. Despite being an average student at Harvard, Roosevelt was able to differentiate himself on the school newspaper, the Crimson. He even spent an extra year at Harvard taking graduate courses, so that he could serve as editor in chief of the newspaper (Lowi, par. 3). After Harvard, Roosevelt enrolled in Columbia University’s school of law, but he later dropped out and pursued practice as an attorney. Roosevelt was observed with skepticism by fellow democrats because of his aristocratic bearing and tendency to look down on others. He was also unfamiliar with the working class voters and was a former Republican. The political climate in 1910 demanded a reformer, and Roosevelt was able to gain favor with his campaign. Roosevelt displayed “pragmatic unorthodoxy” that caught the nation’s attention. He campaigned for office in an automobile which was unusual at the time because people were weary of this new invention (Magill 703-705).
