Franz Schubert, Austrian composer, was born January 31 of 1797 near Vienna, Austria. Franz Schubert was one of nineteen siblings and nine of his siblings died in infancy. Schubert was the youngest of a group of four children who survived passed infancy. Fourteen of the Nineteen Children were the children of Elizabeth, Franz’s mother. Franz was the son of a Moravian schoolteacher Franz and his wife Elizabeth who was in the service as a cook. Franz Schubert was born in the house that was known as the Red Crayfish however today it is known as 54 Nussdorfer Strassse in the ninth district of Vienna. Salieri was a very good teacher to Schubert and due to his guidance, the young Schubert was composing his first piano pieces, string quartets and songs. When he was thirteen he wrote his first piano composition which was a fantasia. At the age of seventeen Franz Schubert wrote his first masterpiece of Gretchen at the Spinning wheel. In 1815 alone, when Franz was eighteen to nineteen years of age he wrote more than twenty thousand bars of music, which includes nine church works, a symphony and 150 songs including eight that he wrote in only one day in October of 1815. At the age of nineteen years Franz was studying both law and composing his Symphony No. 5. This is said to be the piece that got Schubert to drop out of studying law.
