Kevin is 70 centimeters tall and Max is 190 centimeters tall. Although these two boys both have disabilities they don’t let them stop them from having dangerous quests and awesome adventures. The summer before 8th grade Kevin moves in down the street from Max. They help each other by doing what the other can’t, Kevin rides on Max’s shoulders because he is too short and Kevin helps Max with education and making decisions. The theme of Freak the Mighty is that you can be friends with someone no matter your differences because Kevin and Max are polar opposites.
One thing that makes Kevin and Max so different is that Kevin is small Max is tall. Once Max and Kevin were watching fireworks at the pond, Kevin can’t see over the large crowd of people because he is too short. Max lifts Kevin onto his shoulders, so Max must be as tall as the crowd because Kevin can see after Max puts him on his shoulders. Also, in Kevin’s dictionary he gave to Max for Christmas it says “KEVIN, a unit of measurement equal to 70 centimeters” He is 2 foot 4 inches tall because there are 30 centimeters in one foot. When Kevin is riding on Max’s shoulders Kevin tells him to go east Max doesn’t know which way is east and has to use Kevin’s compass. Which way is east is a pretty commonly known thing. Max also says “I Never had a brain until freak came along” What Max is saying is before he met Kevin he wasn’t as smart because Kevin taught him many things like how to search a word in a dictionary and what the knights of the round table were. Also Kevin is sitting on Max’s shoulders during the fireworks. He starts shouting out the names of the chemicals in the fireworks for example “Potassium chlorate” and “Potassium nitrate”. I have never heard of these chemicals and I don’t think many people on planet earth can identify the chemicals in fireworks so he must be pretty
