In the novel Freak the Mighty, Max discovers the meaning of friendship by facing many challenges. Don't worry, it’s not horrible like let’s say, My Little Pony. Full of flat characters and boring storyline brainwashing you with boring morals. It goes much farther than that, the book tells the story of Maxwell Kane, a kid who believes that he is retarded and is often made fun of. He has a disorder that causes him to be unnaturally tall, and he has spent most of his life sealed off in the basement of his grandparents house. Or as he likes to call it, “the Down Under”. His grandparents, Grim and Gram, are afraid of him due to the the fact that he is, and I quote “A spitting image of his old man”. His father was kind of sort of a crazy murderer and killed his wife, Maxwell’s mom, Anne. But things start to turn around for Max as he soon meets Kevin Avery. Kevin becomes his best friend and teaches Max a lot. Kevin was incredibly intelligent, but he was small and could barely walk around on his own. This is because an adventure is different for every person. To Freak and Max, an adventure is going through town pretending to be on a quest or mission (which sometimes gets them in trouble). To me, it would be going on a game and playing with my friends, so what does it mean by adventure exactly. Well, it doesn’t, it means playing games. It is blatantly obvious that Max and Kevin are playing fantasy. There are a few real adventures they have like when they return a stolen purse, Or when Freak saves Max from his father. But the incident with Max’s father was hardly an adventure but more of a hostage situation! And Max and Kevin were still pretending and calling Loretta “A damsel in distress.” In the purse adventure.
