By 1949 Shuttleworths was preaching at Selma's First Baptist Church for $10 a week. Fred Graduated Valedictorian from High School. He assorted jobs before finding his calling to the pulpit. In 1953 he soon became a pastor at Birmingham’s Bethel Baptist Church and he took over it. In 1955 he supported the Montgomery bus Boycott led by King.
