In 1863, Douglass talked with President Abraham Lincoln regarding the treatment of black soldiers, and later with President Andrew Johnson on the subject of black suffrage. became the first African American nominated for vice president of the United States as Victoria woodhull's running mate on the Equal Rights Party ticket in 1872.
Frederick and Anna Douglass had five children: Rosetta, Lewis Henry, Frederick Jr., Charles Redmond and Annie, who died at the age of 10.
