Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was born in February 1817 in Eastern Maryland.1 His mother was a slave and he didn't know anything about his father. He had four sisters and one brother named Sara, Eliza, Arianna, Kitty, and Perry. He hardly saw his mother while growing up and was raised by his grandmother until the age of seven. He was forced to work under harsh treatment on the property of Captain Aaron Anthony. After some time Douglass was sent to serve Hugh Auld in Baltimore, Maryland in 1825.2

While living with the Auld family Douglass's life slightly got better. Mr. Auld's wife Sofia taught Douglass how to read and write even though it was banned. Mr. Auld soon found out about this and made his wife quit teaching Douglass but
