Located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the beautiful scenic downtown of Easton Maryland in front of the well-manicured outside entrance lawn of the Talbot County Courthouse stands a very beautiful stately life - size bronze statue of one of its native sons, the Honorable Frederick Douglass. The life – like statue pays tribute and honor to this great African – American hero who began his humble beginnings here in Talbot County in a small community called Tuckahoe where he was born a slave. The statue was commissioned by the generous contributions provided by the many benefactors of the Frederick Douglass Honor Society to be dedicated in Douglass’s birthplace, where he experienced both many good and negative trials which helped form him into a great leader and civil rights icon. Many of the local, civic, and state leaders all felt that it was only befitting that such a well – known, honored and respected leader around the world should be honored in his hometown in which produced such a great man as Douglass. The first time I laid eyes on this local masterpiece truly moved me to tears because I was in total awe. I guess I feel this way because I’m also from the Eastern Shore and from listening to the elders, family members, and from studying history have learned that life on the Delmarva Peninsula alias “ Eastern Shore “ hasn’t always been favorable to African Americans. I will say that life here and in many places throughout our country have progressed for the better because of the contributions of great men such as Douglass who paved the way for equality as we know it today. It truly moves me to see him honored like this in front of a local location, the courthouse historically known for its slave
