Slavery is horrible, inhumane thing that should never be performed on anyone, especially if it is their mankind. Both the physical and mental hardships of a slave are very immense, and it is something no human being should ever go through. However, Throughout the novel, Frederick Douglass has suffered a great deal of both physical and mental pain but has been able to keep his sanity and escape the mental torment of slavery. Instead, he learned and adapted to his surroundings to survive his ordeal of slavery, and eventually escape. This leaves me to believe that the slaves suffered more physical pain than mental suffering. One example is when FD’s mother died. When FD was born, he was immediately split from his mother to keep the baby and his/her mother to gain a bond with each other. This is done to all of the slaves so that way the son/daughter will not grow to love their parents and live on their own not stopping to care about their parents. If one parent were to die of some caused or be punished by one of the slave owners, the child would more than likely not care as they would not have the special bond that unites them together. Most of the time, the slave child would be split from his/her family and would usually never see their parents ever again. Even though FD’s mother walked over to his plantation every night to see him, they were split long enough for them to where FD didn’t care much for his mother. His mother to him was just another stranger in the plantation that just cares about him. When his mother finally passed, he found about it days after. Once he did get confirmation on his mother’s passing, he showed no feelings for her and treated her as another stranger that died on the plantation, which happens quite a lot.
