Thomas Campbell once said “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”. Heroes are just normal everyday people that are motivated to do the right thing. Anyone could be a hero but unfortunately not everyone has the same mindset as heroes. Heroes show no fear even when they are afraid, they sacrifice as much as they need to even though they know it might go unnoticed. A hero is willing to stand up when no one else around is willing to. For example, in an asian folktale a young girl Mulan goes to war in replacement of her father who is sick and incapable of going to war (SB p.75). Mulan risked her life trying to help out when she probably had as good a chance of making it through as her father. In addition, Mahatma Gandhi once said “You must be the change you want to see in the world”. Gandhi did this himself because he was the leader in the Indian independence movement and they won. In this case, Frederick Douglass “I have been engaged in pleading the cause of my brethren” (SB p.72). Frederick Douglass endangered his freedom without hesitation when trying to help out other african-american slaves. Likewise, Abraham Lincoln was once described as “the cause he so ably, patiently, faithfully represented and defended- not for himself only, not for us only, but for all people in their coming generations” (SB p. 68).
