Introduction

Frederick Law Olmsted is known by many as the Father of American Landscape Architecture. Landscape architecture is the art of designing gardens, grounds, parks, and other outdoor spaces together with the surrounding buildings and roads. He, along with his partner Calvert Vaux, invented the first park system, the parkway, and the profession of landscape architecture. Olmsted worked for over 40 years and completed 550 projects by the time of his death, including Central Park in New York, the grounds of Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, the grounds of the United States Capitol Building in D.C., the Emerald Necklace in Boston, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Niagara Falls State Park, and the Chicago World Fair.
