Fredrick Douglass is a man of constitution, holding true to America’s values. Douglass, a symbol of freedom, experienced slavery first hand and holds that as a reminder to work to create a balance of the people and the government. He states “The cry of Free Men was raised, not for the extension of liberty to the black man, but for the protection of the liberty of the white.” This quote raises questions and ignites thought on how deep the Union and Confederacy rivalry runs. Fredrick’s quote rings true as the Democrats attacked more than just the African Americans. They used slavery as their scapegoat, and the way they could climb the ladder of control. They wanted power over not only other races, but of the United States entirely, even reaching
