“The Reality of Free Community College Tuition,” was written by an enrollment manager at a community college, Fran Cubberley. Fran discusses President Obamas proposal to make the first two years of community college free for students. In this article, she discusses her views on Obamas plan and mentions the current barriers standing in the way for student and the various doors and opportunities that would open for students after receiving a High School diploma. President Obamas plan for two years free at community colleges would help an estimated 9 million people and save each of them around $3,800 per year according to Cubberley. Cubberley who is an enrollment manager says “1,300 students who completed our entry process through the course registration ultimately dropped out before classes were underway. One of the major reasons was they could not pay their tuition.” (Cubberley 1) Although community colleges have lower tuition costs, many are still unable to afford a postsecondary education. She is knowledgeable on education and uses facts to support her views on why students should receive two free years of community college. Cubberley gives facts from the college she works at and other statistics regarding students all over. She also voiced her concern about the proposal, and came up with a solution to potentially fix the issue. The facts brought up are credible and came from her personal facts and knowledge and included some from the NACAC. Cubberley is writing to students and their families enrolled in college, teachers and school faculty may also be interested in this article.
