Frederick Douglass was never mentally a slave. He conveyed freedom with his narrative in many different ways. He showed if for one when he fought back after the slave owner and a servant tried to tame him. He mentally fought back when he learned how to read in write. He later became a abolitionist. Within the Narrative Battle with Covey his bravery was shown and he was considered “free”. In “Battle with Covey” the slave owner tried to tie Fredrick up after he obeyed a ordered and leaving the stable. As he was leaving and Covey had his legs his only resolution was to fight back. He grabbed him by his neck and choked him vicariously. While calling for his servant that tried tying him up, nothing worked. It was almost as he was on a rampage.
