Did females of Othello acquire their freedom equally? Although, women are legally equal to men, but they were still being ruled under male dominance in Othello. In William Shakespeare's romantic tragedy, the main female characters (Desdemona and Emilia) has given more acknowledge in the play than male characters because both females came from different class; Desdemona a wealthy lady and Emilia a maid; wife of Iago. Women's roles in Othello were not in their favor because they were forced to listen to false statements from society upon them; but still could not do anything else to make things positive. Women did not enjoy the same freedom as they do today. At that time, there were strict rules and social hierarchies about how women should act. Women were so busy and focused towards their responsibilities for maintaining the honour of their families, and there was a big issue for them considering their freedom in a society which made them realized how they cannot go anywhere unescorted. Female characters of Othello were also very feminine because they have been shown as a careful women for the whole society as it shows how Desdemona tells Cassio, that she will help him to earn his reputation back in his beloved husband’s eyes. Also, Female roles of Othello were very obedient to the society than men, and it proves how both females (Desdemona and Emilia) are both loyal to their husbands, and show them explicit love, after even getting pain and suffering from their husbands.
