Have you ever wondered how the french settlers back in the day contributed into American culture? The French people have influenced cities, languages, and food. Lets learn about the settlers that first came to America, what they did and how it affects us. In the year 1534, King Francis of France sent a voyage of sixty-one men on two ships led by Jacques Cartier. Of course like other explorers he searched for an easier, shorter passage to Asia through the Atlantic. What they found would change the world. In the Americas French traders were interested in trading fish and fur. The French language continues to be one of two official languages spoken in Canada. But in the city of Quebec French is the main language spoken. The French language has also had its effect on english. Many words from our language are from a French origin. These words include ballet, boutique,café, chef, debut, restaurant, resumé, menu, protégé and many more. Also many North American cities and states have names of French origin, such as Detroit, Des Moines, Montreal, Quebec and Louisiana. An interesting fact is that settlers named Louisiana after King Louis XIV. In Quebec and Louisiana French settlers introduced French architecture.Buildings in New Orleans have the wrought iron balconies. French-cajun cooking is popular in Louisiana. Cajun dishes are usually spicy food with ingredients like fish, shrimp, and the popular crawfish. It is easy to prepare and all ingredients are locally grown. French Canadians put their spin on things by using locally grown maple syrup. The most important thing France has given us is believe it or not is the Statue of Liberty. He built a famous tower named after him too. France gave it to America as a present that represented their long lasting friendship.
