Friar John's Death In Romeo And Juliet Essay

In his book Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare uses the scene in which Friar John, the messenger, fails to deliver a letter to Romeo from Friar Lawrence explaing Juliet's staged death to manipulate the reader into believing that lovers’ deaths were a result of a series of unfortunate events. In Act 5 Scene 2 of the Play, a letter from Friar Lawrence is asked to be delivered to Romeo. However, the outbreak of the plague prevents Friar John from leaving Verona to deliver the letter to Romeo. Friar lawrence later finds out that Friar John, the messenger, hadn’t delivered the letter to Romeo informing him that Juliet's death is being staged and she is very much alive. Friar Lawrence then cries out “Unhappy Fortune” because Romeo now doesn’t know Juliet's death is being faked and takes his own life to be with Juliet. This scene is significant because it shows though unforeseen by Friar Lawrence and Juliet, Friar John's failure to deliver would had such a deadly outcome: the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
When I first read Romeo and Juliet, I thought Friar lawrence was solely to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths’. Now that I’ve read it again, I know the author was trying to show that fate, the death of Romeo and Juliet can not be escaped. Even though the audience knows that Romeo and Juliet are fated to die from the prologue of the book, you continuously ask could it have ended differently?

A Tragedy is an event that often refers to the downfall of an innocent character(s). From the prologue, you are told that Romeo and Juliet are "star-crossed lovers (that will) take their life”. Furthermore, though the death of the lovers is tragic, it is not much of surprise ending to readers. I think that the author's purpose for wasn’t necessarily to feel for their deaths ,but to erupt strong emotions along the way from the
