In the novel, Friday Night Lights, written by Buzz Bissinger, it displays how life revolved around football in a small town located in west Texas called Odessa. Throughout the book we see how the senior class of 1988 made their way to the playoffs, and ultimately the most important game of their high school careers. We are shown an inside look into the home and school life that these young athletes endure. Bissinger opens the eyes and hearts of readers to the physical, mental, and social responsibility of being a football player in Odessa. In the novel, it shows how damaging and prevalent adults, and communities, living vicariously through their children actually was. Parents who live vicariously through their children are often referred to as narcissistic parents. This term is used by psychologists, social workers, and counselors alike because it has the same effect in all levels of child development. It, in short, means parents either attempts to have either full control or no control whatsoever over their child’s actions, success, and development. Throughout the book we are shown examples of each independent form of this narcissistic parenting, and the hard strain it puts on all parties involved. This strain and push is provided from the highest levels of education, social and economic status, all the way down to the lesser known members of the community. The short term and long term effects this has on the children and adults alike is still something that is evident in today’s society.I believe Bissinger expertly wrote and created this novel in a way that it will never lose it relevance and seriousness. Times have changed and evolved since the 80s, yet in retrospect we haven't strayed that far from previous paths in society
