Friendship In Rodman Philbrick's Freak The Mighty

Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget. In Freak The Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, Max and Kevin join forces to become, “Freak The Mighty”. Kevin, who is forced to wear a leg brace because of his birth defect is super intelligent and has a big personality. Then Max, who gets attacked by his father but Kevin saves him. Later on in the book, Kevin dies because of his illness. Although Max lost his best friend, their relationship will still live in the heart. In Rodman Philbrick’s realistic novel, Freak The Mighty, two important themes are the power of friendship and the real fact that you shouldn’t judge someone by their appearance.

Friendship is one of the only things you need in life. Freak and Max never really had a friend and now they have each other and care about each other more than ever. It’s important to be able to count on someone when you need them. As it states in the text on page 131, “....when I hear a window breaking, then a small faraway voice is saying, ‘ Put your hands up villain!’ and I really am falling and the air is coming back to my lungs so fast, it hurts”. The evidence is showing that freak risked his life for Max. Freak could have gotten killed by Killer Kane, but when Killer Kane tried to get him Max stepped in and saved Freak.As it states in the text “I'm winding it up and flying it around. Figuring maybe Freak will get a chance to look out the window and see it fluttering by, that's my plan…”. The text is showing that Max wants to know if Freak is ok, but he can't go inside so he just wants him to know that he is there for him. Max is a really caring person and wants to know about Freak. Overall Max and Freak would do anything for each other and they could always count on that.

In the novel Freak The Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, two important themes that are shown is the power of friendship and the fact that no one should judge someone by their appearance.
