Nursing is a complex profession encompassing many facets such as, prevention and promotion of healthcare, all while maintaining an atmosphere of caring. Since the inception of the first nursing school in 1860 by Florence Nightingale these concepts and many more have been taught to hundreds of thousands of persons around the world, seeking nursing as their profession. As the growth of nursing schools evolved so did the need to establish core values for each program. Today, most nursing programs have, a set of beliefs, a vision for the program and goals they desire their students to accomplish. Throughout the years the nursing college of GCSC has grown by accepting Virginia Henderson’s definition of nursing while incorporating a mission statement, program philosophy and statement of purpose into their program (GCSC, 2012-2013). Each of these elements play a significant role in the operating the GCSC nursing program.
As one of the most well-known nursing theorist of the 21st century Virginia Henderson introduced a “concept of caring”. This theory included fourteen components, based on basic human needs, in which the nurse preforms to increase the overall goal of increasing a patients’ independence (Ahtisham & Jacoline, 2015). The philosophy describes the role of the nursing student which also reflect the outcomes the nursing student is required to meet. When describing the role of the nursing student, discussion is given to the adult learner and the diversity of cultures, acknowledging the need to teach to every person (GCSC, 2012-2013). The philosophy then, delves deeper into what nursing means to the faculty by discussing; Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Virginia Henderson’s theory and Erikson’s definition of development (GCSC, 2012-2013). These short explanations of their beliefs give way to the outcomes.
