Serial Killers
Introduction
A serial killer is a person that will commit a series of murders, many times without any apparent motive. The serial killer typically follows a certain characteristic or predictable behavior pattern (Oxford Dictionaries, 2016). Many past serial killers are productive members of society that seemed to be living normal lives and are usually involved in their communities one way or another. The problem is there are usually warning signs that these individual express in some form or another. The problem is their family, friends, and coworkers tend to ignore or overlook the signs. If people paid more attention to other people and their characteristics, then maybe some of these crimes could have been prevented.

The lifestyle theory is where the individuals place themselves in harm’s way by their lifestyle choices (Argosy University, 2016). Gacy’s victim’s lifestyles were the reason they became subjects of selection due to the way they lived their lives. The victims were either doing drugs, being promiscuous, hanging out in bars on the bad side of town, etc. Majority of Gacy’s victims were selected at gay bars or hitch hiking, participated in drinking and drugs, with the exception of his co-workers. Gacy’s victims were all young men who were of lower-class and lived a different lifestyle out of the norm, many of which were homosexual. These victims’ lifestyles were very intriguing to Gacy because he was infatuated with homosexual tendencies and had extreme interests in young men. By these young men hanging out alone either hitch hiking or in bars, made it very easy for Gacy to select them as his victims. The victim’s interest in drinking and participating in drugs made it even easier for Gacy to befriend them by offering free alcohol and drugs. Since Gacy was a very smooth talker as a salesmen, that helped him when it came to convincing his victims to come home with him to hang out to drink and smoke
