The Galapagos Islands are unique for many reasons. One being that 30% of the native plants are endemic. According to the Galapagos Conservancy, the islands are separated from the ocean by a harsh saltwater barrier that reduces the arrival of new plants, and therefore making it hard for them to migrate to other places. There are between 552 and 614 native vascular plant species on the islands, compared to the approximately 20,00 on its southern neighbor, Ecuador. The three vegetation zones are the coastal zone, arid zone, and humid highlands.
