Gallipoli, the 1981 movie directed by Peter Weir, was a symbolic film which touched on a key part of Australia’s history. The movie has earnt its place in Australia’s heart, however it contains many inaccuracies. Since becoming such a popular movie, the question has been posed – do these historical inaccuracies have an impact on the film? When looking at the false information and mislead emotions, this movie definitely is problematic.
The movie ‘Gallipoli’ is commonly used as an educational source, but it has proved to misinform the audience on key information. Throughout the movie, we see key issues being left out, such as the attack on Sari Bair, a key part/ridge in Gallipoli, not being at all mentioned in the film. This being part of

The audience as are further led to believe this , when we see while masses of Archy’s friends dying, whilst the British are sitting on the beach ‘drinking cups of tea.’ By manipulating this part of the movie, it would have ruined Weir’s ‘underlying theme’. These multiple factors all contribute to the British, in the movie ‘Gallipoli’ being shown as responsible for the many excess killings in World War One,. however, as Hamilton writes, it ‘was Australian officers who failed to prevent the slaughter.’ This false information leads to a strong change in our emotions throughout this movie. This proves problematic, as these emotions convey a message that we have ‘done nothing wrong’ and we are the ‘larrikins’ in the movie, although it was us, as Australians, at fault Hamilton writing ‘British may take the blame for the grand plan for the August Offensive but it was Australian officers who ordered Australian soldiers to charge’The use of only key aspects that ‘endorsed their theme’ in this movie is problematic as we gain a believing that the British were responsible for the deaths of many, when in reality it was Australians. This change in history is extremely problematic, and it continues to educate us with false
