I would like you to close your eyes and take a moment to think back to when you were around the age of 9 or 10. What did you think of when looking back on this period of your life? I know for me personally it was the classic round the twist theme tune, a show i would watch everyday on TV after school. You may open you eyes now. How about you didn't think of any innocent childhood thoughts similar to mine, instead you recalled the name of a big gambling company Ladbrokes and their slogan ‘Bet Better’. This is the prospect for many Australian children today, with 1 in 5 children able to name 3 or more betting companies. This statistic is fuelled by the large numbers of gambling advertisements during sport. And in order for our children to be children, betting advertisements must end.

Family violence is an impact of gambling that is often unrecognised. There are now strong links between gambling and domestic violence with over half of the families with problem gamblers, suffering from some form of violence within the past 12 months. And even more shockingly over half of people with gambling issues have reported to perpetrating physical violence against there children. Not only are children being exposed to gambling ads which may lead them to become gamblers later in life, but are also suffering the consequences of those around them who are problem gamblers.

So, I join you all here today, to join me in ending gambling advertisements during sporting events. We as a community have the knowledge, ability and most importantly a united voice. Let us use this united voice to ensure the memories our children have are ones that are curious and imaginative. Let us use this united voice, to protect the past present and future Australians from the impacts of problem gambling. Let us be united in ending
