My expectations as a Member of Gamma Phi Omega are similar as when I was a cygnet of Gamma Phi Omega back in Fall13 thru Spring14. When I first joined the cygnets of Gamma Phi Omega I really didn’t have a clue of what I was getting myself into. I went to the first informational and I thought ok this organization shares some of my goals. I believe in academic excellence, community service, cultural awareness, and sisterhood. Well I will be honest I didn’t believe much of the sisterhood. I felt that way because I was bullied in middle school. I didn’t really have that many close girls friends because girls would talk behind my back, write ugly letters about me and push me around the halls of the school.
Academic excellence is one of the most important goals of Gamma Phi Omega. Everyone comes to college to educate themselves. We are not there by law or by force. We are in college because we want to better our future. As a Hispanic woman in an all predominant white school I felt a little intimidated. I was afraid of failure and till today that is one of my biggest fears. When I joined the Cygnets I saw this sort of structure of discipline. It makes you open your eyes and see this world full of diverse people. I always enjoyed events that had to do with cultural awareness. I can tell you one of my favorite events that we attended was Sabor de las Americas. This was an event put up by Sigma Lambda Beta international fraternity. This event brought out different organizations from campus into this backyard full of food, people, music and prizes. Of course I loved this event it had food and when I mean full of food I mean it had different kinds of food from all over the Latin American country. I enjoyed interacting with different people from different backgrounds and tasting their amazing
