10. The “Gang of Four” was a group of elite Communist Party of China figures who came to prominence during the Cultural Revolution in China. The group consisted of Mao’s wife, Jiang Qing, and others, Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan, and Wang Hongwen. The Gang of Four’s political, social, and economic vision for China was to make better Mao Zedong’s political career and to reassert his authority over the Chinese government. One thing they did in order to accomplish this was to launch a social political movement called the Cultural Revolution. Jiang Qing was the fourth wife of Mao Zedong a paramount leader of China who did many things during her lifetime before and after her marriage. Jiang Qing was first an actress who gained prominence. For example during her career as an actress she was able to become a professional actress earning the stage name, “Blue Apple” or "Lán Píng". She was also able to appear in numerous films and plays which is another factor that shows her gaining prominence during her career as an actress. After her career as an actress she then became a prominent figure of the Communist Party of China. For example, during her time in power she was able to create a group of fanatic youths that formed the “Red Guard” to go against other political leaders and government officials. Another reason she was a prominent figure of the Communist Party of China is because she is also a part of the “Gang of Four” who were one of the main factors that started the “Cultural Revolution”. After Mao’s death she was put in to a “Special Court” alongside the “Gang of Four” because they were accused of the crimes that occurred during the Cultural Revolution. This is because people believed that Jiang Qing had a role in the Cultural Revolution that resulted in thousands of deaths. In the end Jiang Qing was given a death sentence that was changed into a life imprisonment. During her life imprisonment she was diagnosed with cancer but refused to let it be treated.
