Views on violence suffer from a range of differing opinions. Commonly, in urban schools, violence is associated with, but not limited to, gang brutality. As can be seen in the article written by Dorothy Espelage, “A recent...(NCES) report indicated that about a third of students in grades 9 to 12...had been in a physical fight at least one time during the previous 12 months anywhere, and 12% said they had been in a fight on school property...(Espelage, D. (2015)” Uniforms may not eradicate violence all together, but, it may prove useful in curbing general violence associated with gangs. The effect of school uniforms on student achievement and behavior, “...the Los Angeles times argues that 'in gang-plagued areas where wearing a certain color is enough to set off a fight, [uniforms] create a more neutral atmosphere on campus' (Los Angeles Times, 2009)(Gentile, E., & Imberman, S. (2011)).” In like manner, gang activity is widely spread across, not only the U.S. but, the world. Any step in reducing the immanent threat gangs pose is a positive one. Though, some believe uniforms will not be an aid in correcting the issue. This being said, Peter Caruso states in his article, Individuality vs. Conformity: The Issue Behind School Uniforms, “Those who oppose school uniforms are not convinced that violent incidents or gang activity will decrease because, they feel, these acts are not a result of the school environment. The incidents that occur at school are the result of a number of factors that include home life, parental influence, substance/physical abuse, family values, and cultural tradition(Caruso, P.
