I also recall the novel "The Outsiders" as a story of tremendous and brutal economic times for people during the 1950's. People either needed to find drastic measures in order to fit in, survive or even act, so they would join a gang to better themselves and have resources. Teenagers today are influenced by social media, the internet and what they see on television as a means to participating in a gang.
