The genre of Seventh Grade by Gary Soto is a short realistic fiction story and is to entertain the middle schoolers, specifically the seventh graders, reading the story. Since the intended audience are seventh graders the sentences Soto uses are fairly lengthy sentences full of imagery and figurative language. This piece is told by the perspective of the narrator but views the story through the eyes of the protagonist, Victor, who has liked this girl, Theresa, ever since they were in catechism class together.

Victor will do anything from pretending to know French to embarrassing himself during class just to impress Theresa. Particularly on the day “Mr. Bueller asked if anyone knew French. Victor raised his hand, wanting to impress Theresa.”
