We are faced with hundreds of different messages each and every day. Some messages can be extremely effective, and some we can disregard almost immediately. Everyone has seen one of those commercials on television that left them in awe thinking that the company did a really great job and the Kevin Durant and Dwyane Wade Gatorade commercial is a great example of a commercial done right. Through telling a story with a captivating twist, Gatorade effectively promotes their product even without the use of words. From the list of artifacts, the Gatorade commercial definitely spoke to me the most. Throughout the video, Kevin Durant is shown training at an elite level while utilizing Gatorade drinks, protein shakes and energy chews. The only text in the entire advertisement is ‘Win From Within’, shown at the very end of the commercial and carries the important subtext of the ad. Though at first the commercial may just seem like its trying to motivate athletes to train and get better, the most important piece of the ad is the slogan and Gatorade logo shown at the very end. Both the slogan and the logo imply that Gatorade products are essential in helping athletes achieve their goals. This particular ad is no exception, which leads me to see two purposes in its creation – to promote Gatorade products but also motivation. Of course, when it comes down to it, the basic and most important message of the ad is to buy Gatorade products, but it appeals so well to our intrinsic sense of competition that I believe another goal of the commercial is simply to motivate viewers. Though the advertisement is perhaps majorly intended for athletes, I believe anyone could see this commercial and experience interpellation and become motivated to work on whatever their passion may be. The images of Kevin Durant’s hard work and intense work ethic leading to his success and his competitors failure is hard to ignore and something people yearn
