The novel The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald has showed us about the morality or the lack of molarity in each character throughout the book. One of the examples in the story is Tom Buchanan, who lacks morality. Throughout the novel he is dishonest about certain perspectives about life. Tom Buchanan exhibits dishonesty in this novel, contributing to an overall theme related to morality. The theme of this book is the wealth and social class everyone wants to be on top. The example of being on top Buchanan actions such as throwing lavish parties and his wealth shows his wealth and carelessness about letting others down. The color red best shows and describes this character’s evil actions of having an affair with Myrtle and attitude about many different opinions in life such as wealth. Also in this society typically color red have many different perspectives such as a sign of the devil and dangerous, naughty just like fire. First, in this story some immoral actions that Tom Buchanan shows are the fact of thinking there is one race that is superior to any other than white which is a great example of him being symbolized the color red. The color Red describes Buchanan’s evil action that disturbs society around him. Tom states, “I’ve gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things… The idea is if we don’t look out the white race will be utterly submerged… It’s up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out, or these other races will have control of things” (Fitzgerald, 13). This quote symbolizes for Tom's carelessness and shallow words for other races besides white is negative which goes back to being one of the examples of him represented as the color red for his arrogance. This character shows the lack of morality and attitude towards being racist against African Americans, which indicates this character’s arrogance in the novel. Also, Tom shows absence of morality in the book in the way of having an affair with Myrtle even though he is married to daisy. He has many opinions about values like cheating is wrong even though he cheats on Daisy by having an affair with his maid Myrtle. This makes him a hypocrite. "I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife. Well, if that's the idea you can count me out” (Fitzgerald, 130).
