I had never been to a gay bar until I was down in San Diego for a weekend and went to a gay bar to get acquainted with the community. The purpose of the gay bar is to have a relaxing place that other gays can attend to get to know other people in the community and build a stronger community. The bar I went to is located in a gay neighborhood because other bars and clubs exist in the area. The space of the bar was a small building that had decorations on the outside as a welcoming feature. The interior of the bar was dimly lit but still had enough light to see where you are walking. The interior was clean and was not very full when I first entered. The level of safety to the bar seemed very secure. The area outside the bar was clean …show more content…
The body language they had when talking to their friends or others was very similar. For example, they had a hand to their hip or would get comfortable around their friends and would touch them or lean on them. The language they all used was similar too. They were talking about their life or about other people they knew. I overheard some people talk about experiences they just had when traveling or their future plans. Since it is a bar, everyone seemed very comfortable talking about themselves and about others while not holding anything back. There was a lot of laughter and some even spoke louder to be heard in a larger group. Besides hearing the talking and seeing the way people expressed themselves, I experienced smelling the alcohol in the room and hearing music in the background. The men there seemed like they either middle or upper class considering their clothes were neat and maybe even had a brand logo. There were very few women there but the men would still treat them just as they would treat their male counterparts. They expressed their sexuality by being close to another male but it never got to the point where their actions might be perceived as promiscuous to me. For example, there was close proximity to those that were interested in the other male by hugging or dancing. Everyone demonstrated that they appeared able-bodied as they had no problem walking around and standing around for a long period of time.
